At the ceremony commemorating two decades since official inauguration, Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister in recognition of effective contributions to the institutional development of Vietnam’s securities market.
Hanoi Securities Trading Center (HASTC), the predecessor of Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX), officially commenced operations on March 8, 2005, marking its collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City Securities Trading Center in organizing and operating Vietnam’s securities market. The very first activity launched by HASTC was a share auction, with the initial auction held on March 8, 2005 for the equitization of the Post and Telecommunications Equipment Factory. This event marked the beginning of a transparent and objective auction program, which significantly supported the equitization process of State-owned enterprises.
To date, HNX has successfully conducted 594 auctions, raising over VND92 trillion. Among these were 315 auctions related to the equitization of State-owned enterprises, including many major corporations such as Bao Viet Holdings, Vietnam Steel Corporation, Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex), Vinacomin Power Holding Corporation, Vietnam Engine and Agricultural Machinery Corporation (VEAM), and the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV).
On July 14, 2005, HASTC launched the listed stock market. As of the end of May 2025, the market comprises 311 listed companies with a total market capitalization of approximately VND350 trillion. The market features a broad range of large-scale enterprises and well-established brands such as PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), Vicostone JSC, Tien Phong Plastic JSC, TNG Investment and Trading JSC, Petrolimex Petrochemical Corporation, Vietnam National Reinsurance Corporation (Vinare), and Bim Son Cement JSC. A significant number of these companies were listed immediately following their equitization.

In 2009, Hanoi Securities Trading Center (HASTC) was restructured into Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX), concurrently launching the Unlisted Public Company Market (UPCoM). As of now, UPCoM hosts nearly 900 companies with a total market capitalization of over VND1,360 trillion, equivalent to nearly 12% of Vietnam’s GDP.
Also in 2009, HNX introduced a dedicated government bond trading platform. Over the past 15 years, the value of government bonds mobilized through auctions has surged to more than VND 3.3 quadrillion. Notably, auction yields have shown a downward trend while bond tenors have been extended, contributing to significant savings for the State budget.
In 2017, HNX launched the derivatives market, which has since attracted over 2 million investor accounts. In 2023, HNX began operating the privately placed corporate bond market. The market has witnessed rapid expansion, currently registering 1,207 bond codes issued by 258 entities, with a total value of VND950 trillion. Trading liquidity has reached VND4,807 billion per session, a fourfold increase compared to the 2023 average.

Throughout the course of market operation, Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) has taken the lead in promoting corporate governance among listed companies. This has been achieved through initiatives such as corporate information disclosure quality assessments and awareness-raising programs aimed at enhancing transparency and timely disclosure practices. These efforts have ensured that all shareholders have equal and timely access to information, while also strengthening investor awareness of shareholder rights, with a focus on long-term corporate value and broader contributions to the economy and society.
While 20 years may not be a long period in the lifespan of a stock exchange, it marks a historic phase in laying the foundation for a modern exchange with multiple well-functioning markets operated on advanced technological infrastructure. Over the past two decades, the markets under HNX have served as efficient capital mobilization channels for both the Government and enterprises, while offering a fair and transparent investment platform for investors.
With a 20-year journey marked by proud milestones, HNX has been honored to receive numerous prestigious awards from the Party and the State, including the First-class, Second-class, and Third-class Labor Orders, as well as the Government’s Emulation Flag, among others.

The achievements of HNX are, above all, the result of the strategic guidance and timely, comprehensive direction of the Party, the Government, the Ministry of Finance, the SSC, and the Vietnam Stock Exchange (VNX); as well as the close cooperation and support from ministries, relevant agencies, media organizations, and the wholehearted backing of market members, the business community, and the investing public.

Speaking at the ceremony celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) on the afternoon of June 23, 2025, Chairwoman of the State Securities Commission (SSC), Ms. Vu Thi Chan Phuong, remarked that despite its modest beginnings in terms of resources, technology, and limited awareness among enterprises and the investing public, HNX has continuously pursued innovation, demonstrating proactiveness and creativity. Over time, the Exchange has gradually mastered its core technology systems - from design to operation - while promoting listing activities, diversifying products and market segments, raising investor awareness, and fostering transparency and disclosure standards in capital mobilization practices.
The SSC firmly believes that HNX will continue to enhance the quality of market operation and supervision, develop new financial instruments, accelerate digital transformation, strengthen corporate governance practices, and safeguard investor interests.
